The effects of centuries of massive pollution reduced the fertility of all mammals, especially humans. As early as the 1990s studies showed significant reductions in human sperm count. By 2400 couples needed intense medical and psychological help to bring childern to term. The use of fertility totems developed early as a means to help convince prospective parents that the nine-month cycle is possible. The totem is kept by the shaman and delivered with much ritual and joy to the prospective users.
