This slightly pregnant female figure is a center of the summer solstice festival when the results of the years work is still uncertain. Yes, uncertainty is still a major factor of life. Technology makes high latitude life possible but it does not guarantee its predictability. There are still strong elements of risk, which the deities need to pacify. The totem, while with child, is still at the beginning of the fertility cycle, as is the year itself at the solstice. The very marginality of sufficiency implies the need to worship abundance and fruitfulness.
